Library Annoyance!!

I like to go to the library because it's a time I can really put into studying. I expect to go to the library and be able to study in the designated quiet area with limited noise or disruptions. I get so upset when instead there is a fool who ignores all the "please be quiet" signs and decides to have a conversation on the phone. I went today knowing I would only be there for 2 1/2 hours and there was a lady in there chewing her gum as if she was competing in a gum chewing competition. As much as I tried to ignore her I wanted to go to her to let her know her gum chewing was too loud and annoying. There has been on occasion where I have spoken up  when a guy thought it was okay to have a conversation on his phone. I had to politely tell him that the room he was in was reserved for quiet studying. He quietly stepped out and when he returned he was obviously peeved and began slamming his things on the desk before leaving. Consideration for others is lost on so many people I guess.

  1. I couldn't agree more! I learned to take my iPod and block out the other noise! I get to escape to my own little world and not have to deal with all of the other distractions! You might try it!

    1. I do that also but there are certain subject that I just need complete quiet in order to study better. When the kids were in school I could stay at home and not have to deal with the noise at the library, that's one drawback of summer. I have three classes at the same time this summer, which can present a little challenge for doing what I need to do on time. I have actually been surprised that the library hasn't been more busy with it being summer.

  2. I am the type that really likes having noise around me when I study. Growing up in a house with so many people and having a three year old and puppy really gets me going. The brain juices just flow! With that being said, anyone that goes to a library should know that a library is FOR QUIET STUDYING. Come on guys, get it together! Everyone knows that right?

  3. We definitely live in a world where manners and respect are lost on many people, particularly the young, (but not all of course).
I just want to be sure I don't single out any one group because there are jerks of all ages, right? Next time I would try reporting it to the person on staff perhaps?
Asking yourself unfortunately doesn't work on some.
Another thing that gets me is people forgetting to turn off their cell phone ringers. But, like Bree I can block out most things for a while. Maybe that comes from being a mom? Anyway, try the headphones thing, that definitely works too! Happy studying!

    1. Oh no, both groups are an equal opportunity. You would think that adults would know better, especially with signs on each table asking for consideration and not disturbing others with loud noise. Adults are the one who want to have business conversations, they can even go to the other side of the library but I guess that would make it inconvenient for them. When the class I'm studying for is not one that requires high level concentration, I do take my walkman and listen to music, which helps greatly.

  4. When I go to the library, I expect that there will be someone who will be disruptive only because that's usually what happens on the few occassion that I have gone. I commend you by approaching that person who was talking on the phone since I don't know that I would have the nerve to do so. In the past, I've simply moved away and if that didn't work,I've left.

  5. It's a bit of a thoughtful decision in approaching someone, especially in such a situation. You never know that person's mindset or mental state and what they're capable of. I had just had enough and it just didn't make sense to me that he would that.

  6. I am like you Yinka and need quiet most of the time to study. I have considered going to the library but have yet to do it. Maybe I should reconsider. Sometimes I have to sit in my bedroom and literally plug my ears. You would think a library would force people to be quiet and respectful!

  7. I agree , the library should be quiet , especially in study rooms. Avila's library is alway loud and disruptive in my opinion.

    1. Avila's study room was where I had to "rudely" inform the guy that he was in a study room.

  8. Sometimes I find it amazing that people can be so unaware of their surroundings and that what theya re doing is affecting anyone outside the bubble they've put themselves into. Makes you want to just pour a glass if ice water cver their heads to see if they notice.

  9. I totally get that you need to go somewhere without constant interruptions to get your studying and homework accomplished. I am sorry that even the library isn't working for you because of the inconsideration of others. Well, so what if the guy slams his books down? Just chalk it up to immaturity and selfishness. Many people never grow up. The important thing is you got him to be quiet and got your work done I hope?

  10. I had a library annoyance this week too! I am so behind on my FOUR classes because of my father-in-law... and my FOUR classes :)... so Sunday when we got back in town I packed up all my books and headed to the library at noon. It didn't open til 1... annoying! so I sat our on their patio furniture and read in the wind.... annoying! Time flew because I had so much to do... you can imagine what I thought when I heard them come on the loudspeaker at 4:45 to announce "the library will be closing in 15 minutes." Really? The public library is only open for 4 hours on a Sunday. Say it with me.... annoying!!!

  11. Ohhhh how I HATE when someone chews loud. No one is ever quiet in the "quiet" rooms. I don't even bother with those. People are so rude and have no respect for others.
